No Discounts for Mobile Phone Usage Fine
According to Capt Mohamed Rabia al-Kuwari, Officer of the Violations Department at the General Traffic Department, individuals caught using a mobile phone while driving will face a fine of QR500. He highlighted that a significant percentage of traffic accidents are attributed to mobile phone usage and failure to wear seatbelts while driving.
Discount for Seatbelt Violations
In contrast, a 50% discount will be offered for penalties related to not using seatbelts if the violation is settled within 30 days of being registered. This discount is consistent with certain other traffic violations.
Unified Radar System
Capt al-Kuwari also introduced the new unified radar system, which has the capability to detect multiple violations simultaneously. These violations include not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone, and speeding. The system aims to enhance road safety by enforcing traffic regulations more effectively.
Challenging Violations
Motorists have the right to challenge violations through Metrash 2 or the MoI website, with responses typically provided within a week. The violations are reviewed by those responsible for the unified radar system.
Penalty for Physical Interaction with Visual Devices
It is important to note that physical interaction with visual devices, such as mounted mobile phones and dashboard monitors while driving, will be considered a violation and subject to penalties. Article No. 55 of the Traffic Law prohibits the use of mobile phones or other devices that require hands for operation while driving, as well as watching visual material on a vehicle’s television.
Image Capture
Images of motorists not wearing seatbelts and using mobile phones while driving will be accessible through the Metrash 2 app. The new unified radars have the ability to clearly capture these violations, differentiating between seatbelts and clothing even if they are of the same color. The captured images will provide clear evidence for violators.
Safety and Shared Responsibility
Authorities have urged all road users to comply with traffic laws and regulations to protect lives and property. They emphasize that traffic safety is a collective responsibility of society, requiring the cooperation of individuals to prevent accidents and maintain road safety.
